DescriptionUBC SAILING'S 50th ANNIVERSARY & 1st UBC SAILING CLASSICThis SATURDAY - AUGUST 15thTo celebrate 50 years, UBC Sailing is have a full day of exciting competitions and fun for members of skill levels. Wait, there's more! There will be BBQ and Social where a DJ will spin fun tunes into the evening so come prepared to celebrate 50 years with both past and present members! If you have friends who have been thinking about joining UBC Sailing, this is a great chance to meet us and get excited about being on the water. Following the “Experience" Sailing Windsurfing and Kayaking times, there will be an opportunity to signup for the club (students only) and for lessons (for all members). COST? This event is FREE to current UBC Sailing members. Bring your Jericho card as proof of membership, and receive 2 drink tickets, a food ticket, and birthday cake plus get to participate in any and all events! Please note that members can bring guests for $5 (includes drink tickets, a food ticket, and cake) but guests cannot participate in the events. UBC Sailing Alumni can also partake in the celebrations for $5 and may enter the regatta if they provide their own craft for an additional $5. There will be PRIZES for the winners in each discipline and winner’s names will be forever engraved on the coveted UBC Sailing Classic Cup for all to see. Prizes will be distributed at the Awards Ceremony during the BBQ. OUTLINE OF THE DAY • 11:30 - 12:00 Sailing, Kayaking, Multifleet Relay and Boat Sinking Competition Registration • 12:00 - Sailing Regatta and Paddle War Event Meetings • 12:45 - 3:00 pm Sailing Regatta • 1:00 - 3:00 Kayak Wars • 1:00 - 3:30 Experience Windsurfing • 3:00 - Windsurfing Smackdown Registration • 3:30 - Multifleet Relay • 4:15 - Boat Sinking Competition • 4:30 - 6:30 Windsurfing Smackdown • 4:30 - 6:30 Experience Sailing & Kayaking • 5:00 – 7:00 BBQ and member signup • 7:00 - Awards Ceremony & Birthday Cake • 7:30 – 10:00 DJ & Social SAILING REGATTA (Open to all skill levels) • Learn the right of way rules, flags, and basic racing strategy/rules at the Meeting/Mini Racing Clinic • Signup for the regatta is on a first-come basis and people will be paired with appropriate sailing partners • There will be two classes, Advance (29er, RS500, Hobie) and Standard Performance (FJ, Vanguard, laser) with boats scored using a handicapping system • The number of starts will be discussed at the meeting PADDLE WARS (Open to all skill levels) • For both Kayakers and Stand Up Paddlers • Events will include: 1. Paddling Race: Forward Leg, Reverse Leg, No Paddle Leg and required skills at various marks 2. Pool Noodle Jousting 3. Roll Off – dependent on skill levels of participants. EXPERIENCE WINDSURFING (Open to all skill levels) • 1:00 to 1:30 - Experience windsurfing land clinic 1 (for those new to windsurfing) • 2:00 to 2:30 - Experience windsurfing land clinic 2 (for those new to windsurfing) • 1:30 to 2:30 - Introduction to basic freestyle (Open to all) • 2:30 to 3:30 - Introduction to basic freestyle with water session (For L2 or higher windsurfers) • 2:30 to 3:30 - Waterstarting clinic and Q&A (open to all) Experience Windsurfing Clinic Note: All registrants must attend one of the two land clinics. After taking a clinic, participants will get a chance to sail for 1/2 hour between 1:30 and 3:30. Introduction to Basic Freestyle: A land session (open to all) where instructors will describe some new moves to spice up light wind windsurfing. This will be followed by 1/2 hour of on-water coaching for registered L2 sailors. Water-session sailors must already be competent at tacking, jibing, and getting up-wind or they will lose their spot. Waterstarting clinic and Q&A: Instructors will explain how to waterstart and will be available for Q&A on any windsurfing subject. MULTIFLEET RELAY (Open to all skill levels) • Each team must be composed of three people that can sail, windsurf, and kayak • A course will be provided for that must be completed by each craft • There will be an item that must be passed from kayaker to windsurfer to sailor • The team that finishes in the shortest overall time will be the winner BOAT BUILDING COMPETITION (aka Boat Sinking Competition) • Teams will be set at the start of the day (12 max per team) and will be given materials and tools at noon for the competition at 4:15 • The craft must hold two people, one male and one female. Teams vote on who gets to sail the craft and who gets to be a landlubber. Landlubbers can throw water balloons and insults. • Paddling with the hands or a paddle (if you choose to make one) is allowed. ‘Pool Noodling’ is allowed, but keep it clean. Splashing water on the opposition with hands is encouraged, splashing with a paddle is not allowed. Swimming or paddling with the feet is not allowed. Ramming, crashing, grabbing, pushing, and boarding parties are not allowed. • Scoring will be based on time and distance: score = minutes x distance reached; so both speed and endurance will be important • A craft will be considered as 'sunk' when the crowd says so. WINDSURFING SMACKDOWN (Open to all skill levels) • This event requires crowd participation. So be sure to cheer the competitors on while you enjoy the BBQ! • Events will include: 1. Windsurfing Race 2. Schlogging Race (weather permitting): Contestants will be placed on sinker boards based on weight and complete a race course 3. Freestyle Competition: Head-to-head freestyle competition where contestants must complete as many tricks as possible during a given time. Winners of each round are decided by crowd applause and move on to the next round. EXPERIENCE SAILING (Open to all skill levels) An opportunity to experience all two person boats the club has to offer during from 4:30-6:30. BBQ, AWARDS CEREMONY & SOCIAL (For All) A chance to have fun with fellow club members! Plus winners of competitions will receive their prizes and get a chance to hoist the coveted UBC Sailing Classic Cup.
