1. How do I register for a windsurfing lesson? You must be a UBC Sailing Club member to take lessons with us. Take a look at our lesson schedule and availability to find a lesson that fits your schedule. Log in to our online database and select the lesson you are interested in for pre-registration. Please note that registration is not confirmed until we receive full payment. To secure a spot for a lesson, bring your payment as soon as possible to a UBC Sailing Club representative during office hours. Lessons are not refundable. 2. The lessons that are currently offered do not fit my schedule or are already full. Will you open new lessons during the summer?
We need a minimum of 3 students to open a new lesson. If none of the offered lessons fits your schedule, please email the windsurfing lessons coordinator with your availabilities. It may be possible to open new lessons if there is enough demand for a specific time. 3. What should I wear for my windsurfing lessons?Wetsuits are mandatory from October 1st to June 1st but recommended all year. Be prepared to spend a fair bit of time in the water, especially if you are a beginner. Some people also like to wear water shoes or boots to have a better grip on the windsurfing board. Life jackets and whistles are mandatory and will be provided by the UBC Sailing Club. 4. Do I need to bring my wetsuit for the land session?
No, you will not go in the water during the land session. 5. I registered for a windsurfing lesson but cannot attend anymore. What do I do?Lessons are not refundable. If you want to register in a different lesson, please contact the windsurfing lessons coordinator at least 7 days before the beginning of your first session. Changes will not be allowed outside of this time frame. If you do not notify the windsurfing lesson coordinator in time, you will have to pay a second time in order to register in a different lesson. 6. I have to miss one of my sessions. Can I go to another lesson instead? If you are going to miss a session, you must notify the windsurfing lesson coordinator as soon as possible. We will try our best to fit you into another lesson if there is an opening but only if we have been notified at least 24h in advance. Most lessons are full and we cannot accommodate our members if they do not tell us ahead of time when they are going to miss a session. 7. I missed two sessions. Can I still get a key to access the equipment? You must attend more than 60% of the sessions in order to pass your lesson. If you have missed two sessions or more and we were unable to fit you in another lesson, you will have to pay for a private course or register in a new lesson in order to gain access to the equipment. The instructor will grant access to equipment once you are ready to windsurf safely on your own. 8. I already know how to windsurf. Can I get a key for the equipment?New members who already have experience in windsurfing must pass a proficiency test before getting access to the equipment. To schedule a test, please contact the Windsurfing Fleet Captain and describe your level of expertise in the message. 9. I finished the L1 Beginner Windsurfing Lesson. Can I register for the L2 Intermediate Lesson right away? The beginner lesson gives you the tools to sail on your own safely. However, it takes practice to achieve the balance and control required for L2 lessons. Refer to this post for exercises to practice on the water and guidelines to determine when you are ready for L2 Lessons.
