It's that time of year again... Bring your (dry) damaged wetsuit or neoprene gear and we'll try to help you fix it!

This event coincides with Toolbox Thursday, so feel free to lend a hand while you wait for glue to dry...or just hangout and chat! We'll have a variety of neoprene repair supplies, but please bring anything you are willing to share.

*Wetsuit Repair does not count as work hours.

Drop-ins are welcome, but RSVPs will ensure we know to keep an eye out for you! Come find us in the Hangar at the Jericho Sailing Centre (see map).

Kayaking Skills Building Classroom Session: Trip Planning (13 Apr 2026)

Now that spring is here, it's time to start thinking about kayaking trips! UBCSC Kayaking will be hosting skill building classroom sessions to help plan for your next trip. If you're a total beginner or just want to sharpen your skills, this is for you! Bring whatever questions you have.

There will be three sessions. They are meant to be taken in order, but each will have an individual RSVP in case you can't make one or the other.

Charts/Navigation (led by Caitlin): Tuesday March 24th @6pm-8pm (Surf and Turf Room)

Weather/Tides (led by Alberto/Lucy): Tuesday March 31st @6pm-8pm (NW Room)

Trip Planning (led by Tom): Monday April 13th @6pm-8pm (NW Room)

Beginner/Intermediate Sailing Refresher (18 Apr 2026)

The aim of this course is to give competent sailors with little recent experience the confidence to get back on the water safely.

If you feel really rusty and would like a more thorough course to return on the water, we encourage you to register for a Beginner Sailing course or a skill test session to qualify for a higher-level course.

More details on session time to come... sailing refresher will be roughly 1`hour of dry land and 4 hours on the water.

Prerequisites:

registered as a UBC Sailing Club member for the 2024-2025 season
registered as a JSCA member for the 2024-2025 season
previously passed our beginner or intermediate course
wetsuit and suitable clothing for the conditions

- RS Quest and Laser rigging review
- Review of procedures: down the ramp, launching, landing
- Basic handling: sail trim on all points of sail, tacking, gybing, heave-to

Advanced Sailing A1 (Weekends) (18 Apr 2026)

Welcome to the circus! In this course, sailors will explore the exciting world of trapezes and spinnakers through the RS Quest. This is the first step into the world of higher performance sailing where trapezing is a must and flying spinnaker adds exhilarating downwind flair to one's sail.

Sailors will learn the basics of proper trapezing technique, spinnaker trim and boat handling, special gear care considerations, and effective skipper-crew communication. The RS Quest will provide a very friendly, stable learning platform before sailors step onto the skiffs and catamarans in future courses.

Prerequisites:

Be a UBCSC and JSCA club member for the current season
Passed Intermediate or Cat 1 Sailing with UBC Sailing
Sailed at least 1 season at intermediate level (30+ h on Laser)
Wetsuit: during lessons you will spend a lot more time in the water than you would in a regular relaxed sail

Passing criteria (as per the A1 checklist):

Sound judgement with regards to equipment care, crew experience and gear, weather and sea conditions
Rigging/derigging, safe handling on the boat yard and on the water, well-controlled launch and landing
Balance and speed control at all times with and without trapezing, with and without spinnaker, basic maneuvers including heave-to
Emergency maneuvers such as man overboard, capsize recovery, spinnaker issues
Time and conditions permitting, rudderless and backwards sailing

Format: Sat/Sun 10:00–16:00

Beginner Kayak (22 Apr 2026)

Note: If this class is full, you are welcome to join our waitlist on Discord. If the class does not reach the minimum required number of registrants, we will cancel the class to avoid running it at a financial loss to the club. You will be notified of a canceled class about 24 hours before the start of the first session.

This introduction to kayaking is meant for first timers or inexperienced paddlers. No previous experience is required! The lessons consist of dry land instruction prior to the on-water component and will teach you how to kayak safely, have lots of fun on the water and gain a better understanding of kayaking as a sport.

Paddlers will gain experience in both single and double kayaks depending on group size. This pretty much covers the basic paddling of paddle Canada "Basic Kayak" even if no proper certification is delivered.

Catamaran 1 (C1) – Weekdays & Weekend (21 May 2026)

The Cat 1 course introduces members to multihull sailing on our Hobie 16s. Students learn the basics of sailing a catamaran while also being introduced to trapezing. The Hobie 16 makes for a fun introduction to catamaran sailing as it picks up good speed but is rather uncomplicated compared to our other catamarans.

The main handling difficulties when moving up from intermediate monohulls are:

Sailing upwind: tacks are slower and through a larger angle; one will easily end up in irons if not properly set close hauled before the tack, or mishandling the jib
The boat is stable and will keep sailing away in case of a man overboard
Capsize recovery requires proper technique in higher winds, and can be extremely difficult especially for lighter crew in very light winds

UBCSC Try Sailing X Jericho Open House (23 May 2026)

Curious about sailing? Want to see a new side of Vancouver and make the most of the beautiful, vast ocean at our doorstep? Come experience the wind in your sails at our UBC Try Sailing event on Saturday, May 23rd from 12:ooH to 16:00H at the Jericho Sailing Centre!

Whether you've never set foot on a boat or you're just looking to get back on the water, this is the perfect (FREE!) opportunity to get your feet wet and try dinghy sailing with experienced members of the UBC Sailing Club. No previous experience required--open to UBC students and the general public!

You will have the chance to sail aboard our RS Quest or Hobie 16 boats with seasoned club sailors, tour the UBC club facilities and learn about our membership options and diverse fleets (including windsurfers, kayaks, SUPs)! This event coincides with the Jericho Sailing Centre's Open House, so you will also be immersed in our vibrant community of water sport-enthusiasts and volunteers, see the Jericho Rescue boats in action, and receive member-discounts at the Galley Patio & Grill!

IMPORTANT NOTES:
-This event is FREE but early registration is recommended to guarantee a spot. Walk-ins may be accommodated, if space allows.

-All participants must sign our liability waiver upon check-in at our club booth.

-You will be wearing a club PFD, but all participants must know how to swim.

-Be prepared to get wet! Wear clothing that will keep you warm and non-marking shoes that you're ok wearing in the ocean. It's also a good idea to bring a towel and/or change of clothing for after.

Registrants must be at least 18 years old. The club reserves its right to suspend on-water activities to ensure the safety of all participants, depending on weather conditions.

The main handling difficulties when moving up from intermediate monohulls are:

Sailing upwind: tacks are slower and through a larger angle; one will easily end up in irons if not properly set close hauled before the tack, or mishandling the jib
The boat is stable and will keep sailing away in case of a man overboard
Capsize recovery requires proper technique in higher winds, and can be extremely difficult especially for lighter crew in very light winds

Prerequisites:

Be a UBCSC and JSCA club member for the current season
Wetsuit: the Hobie 16 is a wet boat; during lessons you will spend a lot more time in the water than you would in a regular relaxed sail

Catamaran 1 (C1) – Weekdays & Weekend (3 Sep 2026)

The main handling difficulties when moving up from intermediate monohulls are:

Sailing upwind: tacks are slower and through a larger angle; one will easily end up in irons if not properly set close hauled before the tack, or mishandling the jib
The boat is stable and will keep sailing away in case of a man overboard
Capsize recovery requires proper technique in higher winds, and can be extremely difficult especially for lighter crew in very light winds

Prerequisites:

Be a UBCSC and JSCA club member for the current season
Wetsuit: the Hobie 16 is a wet boat; during lessons you will spend a lot more time in the water than you would in a regular relaxed sail

Passing criteria (as per the C1 checklist):

Sound judgement with regards to equipment care, crew experience and gear, weather and sea conditions
Rigging/derigging, safe handling on the boat yard and on the water, well-controlled launch and landing
Balance and speed control at all times with and without trapezing, basic maneuvers including heave-to
Emergency maneuvers such as man overboard, capsize recovery in light winds with the help of a waterbag
