  Welcome to the circus! In this course, sailors will explore the exciting world of trapezes and spinnakers through the RS Quest. This is the first step into the world of higher performance sailing where trapezing is a must and flying spinnaker adds exhilarating downwind flair to one's sail.

  Sailors will learn the basics of proper trapezing technique, spinnaker trim and boat handling, special gear care considerations, and effective skipper-crew communication. The RS Quest will provide a very friendly, stable learning platform before sailors step onto the skiffs and catamarans in future courses.

  Prerequisites:

  • be a UBCSC and JSCA club member for the current season
    
  • passed Intermediate Sailing with UBC Sailing
    
  • wetsuit: during lessons you will spend a lot more time in the water than you would in a regular relaxed sail

  Passing criteria (as per the A1 checklist):

  • sound judgement with regards to equipment care, crew experience and gear, weather and sea conditions

  • rigging/derigging, safe handling on the boat yard and on the water, well-controlled launch and landing
  • balance and speed control at all times with and without trapezing, with and without spinnaker, basic maneuvers including heave-to
  • emergency maneuvers such as man overboard, capsize recovery, spinnaker issues
  • time and conditions permitting, rudderless and backwards sailing

• Windsurfing Regatta: Rabbit Racer

  You must be an active member and certified to use UBC windsurfing gear, for non-members it's BYOG (Bring Your Own Gear).

  Roll on down to Jericho to rinse in the ocean riptides and show off your remarkable reaches for our third-annual Rabbit Racer Windsurfing Regatta. Featuring both Rabbit Starts and even a Rabbit Finish! There will be beginner and longboard courses, and even a slalom course depending on the wind.

  We'll have a racing clinic first where we'll review the courses, right-of-way rules, racing strategy and tactics, and of course how to do a Rabbit Start. While some of the hoppy carrot-lovers among you may have heard about Rabbit Starts, you're probably wondering about the Rabbit Finish, which we'll use for the beginner course. We're uniquely suited to this at Jericho: the first person to land safely, correctly bring their gear onshore, collect their phone, and take a picture of a Jericho bunny rabbit will be the winner!

  Preliminary Sailing Instructions (subject to change):

  • The beginner course will start from the beach, round a mark slightly upwind, and end with a Rabbit Finish.
  • The longboard course will have a Rabbit Start with one of the windsurfing racers as the rabbit, then a standard triangle and standard finish.
  • The slalom course (wind permitting) will have a Rabbit Start with a gasoline-or-paddle-powered rabbit, followed by as many reaches and gybes as we have marks.

  Prerequisites:

  • registered as a JSCA member for the current season
  • registered as a UBC Sailing Club member for the current season
  • able to swim
  • wetsuit

  The aim of this class is to get you out on the water ASAP. Learn basic handling of equipment, self-rescue and the mechanics of moving across the water on a board. Get ready to get wet, swim, carry, launch and maneuver equipment in the water while you learn:

  • How to read conditions
  • Safety precautions and obstacles
  • Launch and land safely
  • Safe storage, selection, management and care of equipment
  • Uphauling and getting going
  • Steering, points of sail, right of way
  • Turning (tacking)
  • Self-rescue

  For you to pass the course, your instructor must feel confident in your ability to:

  • Take proper care of the equipment in a safe manner
  • Know club procedures and policies including beginner windsurfing zone, maximum wind speeds for beginner windsurfing, and signing out and returning gear at Jericho.
  • Read the wind and currents and be able to self-rescue back to shore at any point.
  • Safely launch and show awareness of your surroundings on the water, avoid obstacles and stay within the 5kt zone at all times.

  This Women's * Sailing social is a great way to meet other women* in the Club, hone up skills and learn new ones in a supportive and friendly environment. Women* will be paired up depending on skill level so more experienced sailors can share some of their skills and wisdom with more beginner level sailors.
  There is no agenda for this afternoon and it will all  be very informal. Day of, you can discuss what skills you would like refreshed or what new skills you'd like to try with your sailing partner. Please do register for the event and answer all the questions so we can get an idea of your current level and what you're interested in getting out of this evening.
  *The term women" is inclusive of cis and trans women as well as non-binary folks.
